The composer of Valse Isabel is Van Veachton Rogers. He was born in Berlin in 1864 and died in 1933. Valse Isabel is a waltz, a type of ballroom dance that involves 3/4 time. This piece is in ternary form, starting with the “A” part, then transitioning into a “B” part with a more bold and bright sound, then back to the “A” part again. Greensleeves, Traditional Irish Tune, arr. McDonald
Written around 1560, there is a lot of controversy over the original composer of this piece. Rumor is, King Henry VIII wrote this song for his lover, Lady Anne Boleyn, who eventually rejected his attempts to seduce her. In the original lyrics, it says “to cast me off discurteuously”, hinting the connection between Anne and King Henry VIII. Surprisingly, this song about a lover’s attempts to seduce a woman eventually became a Christmas Carol composed by William Chatterton Dix in 1865 as an alternative version of the original Greensleeves. |
